A wet tap on a 16-inch HDPE main is not a small ask. The pipe is live, the water is pressurized, and there is zero margin for error. That is exactly the kind of work we wrapped up in Lake Elmo - a 16"x8" wet tap that required the right cutter, the right equipment, and a crew that has done this enough times to make it look routine.

The cutter you see here is no joke. That serrated hole saw is built specifically for cutting through HDPE under pressure - and it has to be. HDPE is flexible and tough, and a standard cutter will not get you a clean, controlled cut on a main this size. Getting that coupon out clean is what separates a smooth tap from a messy one.

Down in the excavation, the tap saddle is bolted tight to the 16-inch main with a gate valve seated right on top. That valve is what makes this a hot tap - we drill through while the system is live, isolate the cut, and the existing water service never goes down. No shutoffs, no disruption, no complaints from the people upstream.

That is the real value of hot tap work. Shutting down a main to make a connection can mean hours of downtime and a long list of affected users. When you can make the connection while the system stays pressurized, everyone benefits. It takes specialized gear and experience to pull it off cleanly, but that is why crews call us for this kind of work.
