


Shutting down a water main isn't always an option. On active campuses, commercial sites, and municipal systems, taking a line out of service can mean disrupting hundreds of people at once. That's exactly why wet tapping exists - and why doing it right matters so much.
We headed up to Lake Superior College in Duluth to complete an 8"x6" wet tap on an existing underground water line. The goal was simple: make a new branch connection without ever taking the main line out of service. No shutoff. No service interruption. Just a clean, controlled tap into a live pressurized system.
This kind of work isn't something you wing. The fitting has to be seated and torqued correctly before the drill ever touches the pipe wall. The valve has to be staged and ready to isolate the cutter the moment the tap is complete. Every step has a sequence, and that sequence exists for a reason - because you're working against pressure the whole time.
What we ended up with was a solid new connection tied into the existing main, installed with zero disruption to the surrounding infrastructure. The college's water system kept running throughout. That's the whole point of a hot tap - keeping things moving when a shutdown simply isn't in the cards.
